According to National Today, “Stress can have adverse affects on our physical health, and when left unchecked, it can lead to chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity. To raise awareness about the importance of mental well-being, October is observed as Emotional Wellness Month.Learn a bit about mindfulness. Take a break from your hectic schedule. Slow down a little. Breathe.”
Also according to National Today, “Emotional Intelligence Awareness Month is an annual designation observed in October. Take time during the month of October to become more aware of your Emotional Intelligence and learn precisely what and how it works. Find different approaches to perceiving, understanding, and managing emotions and putting them to work for you.”
Taking an entire month to observe our emotional well-being is perfect for us at Femme! If you’ve ever met our founder, Bernadette Pleasant, you’ve probably heard her say, “There are no good, bad, light or dark emotions. Only emotions that need to be fully expressed.”
Why is Femme! observing and celebrating National Emotional Wellness month?
Well, that’s because our brand was created for this exact thing. Taken straight from our Femm! book, “In today’s world we are bombarded with experiences that draw us away from a pleasurable sense of ease in our minds and bodies. Everything from daily stressors, to fatigue, to trauma can leave us feeling tense, depleted, unhealthy and out of balance. That’s why Femme! was created. Femme! reconnects us to our innate power.” Femme! is a healing body of work that fuses sensual movement, mind-body wellness and primal raw emotions. You can watch our founder share more on our origins here.
What we’d like to do for you this month is offer prompts, gentle reminders and inspiration for taking care of your emotional wellness. This month we are going to take you on a virtual and social Emotional Tour®. Going along with our “Adventure” theme for this quarter, it’s perfectly suitable that we call it the Emotional Tour because we get stuck in no one emotion. We are going to be your tour guide during each week’s tour stop. We don’t view emotions as “positive” and “negative.” We firmly believe all emotions need to be expressed but the importance is not getting stuck in them. We can sit with them. We can move them throughout our body. We can shake them off…but we do something. And then, we move on to the next.
Each week, starting today, we are going to focus on one emotion. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, we will release an inspirational prompt for you. We encourage you to leave comments on line or in your journals.
This week’s emotion for National Emotional Wellness Month is JOY!
Joy is the emotion of great delight caused by something exceptionally satisfying. Its keen pleasure; elation; and festive gaiety.
Share below a song that comes immediately to mind when you hear the word JOY. In fact, why not make a playlist of all the songs that make you feel JOY in your body. Throughout this week, play your music and let us know how it makes you feel.
We asked our Femme! Attuned Teachers and our Licensed Femme! Teachers to share some tips for observing National Emotional Wellness month and here are a few pearls of wisdom.
“Every morning when you awaken, take a moment to breathe and check in with yourself. Find something you are appreciative for and think of that. Give yourself a little squeeze. Feel into how you want to feel that day and who you want to be and imagine what that would feel like. Keep a little glass of lemon water and some lotion by your bed. Hydrate with the water and give yourself a quick hand or foot massage before getting up. Starting the day mindfully, even if you only take five minutes, can make all the difference in the world in how you feel that day.”

Here’s a super easy way for someone to honor where they are emotionally….The next time someone asks you “how are you?” take this an opportunity to actually tune-in to your body and your emotional state. Rather than answer the culturally common, mindless response of “I’m fine”, find the truth within you. Take a min to check in. Not only will this help you give voice to your feelings, it also offers a chance to practice vulnerability with another human being and build a more meaningful bond with that person.– Stephanie Redlener, Licensed Femme! Have more fun and don’t take yourself too seriously. Balance in life is important for maintaining emotional health. Too much emphasis on work, parenting, your looks, or your desires can cause stress as well as wear and tear on the mind. I have a funny phrase I say to myself, “Come down from the cross. You can use the wood for better things.” Taking time off; go to the beach, the park or a movie to take your mind off your current quandaries. If you can’t do that take a dance break, play some music that changes your mood and puts you back into a more positive vibe. Chances are when you come back you will see things from a fresher, more productive perspective.– Rachel (Odhner) Hotson, Licensed Femme! Teacher and Founding Femme! Apprentice
Observe emotional wellness month with mindful awareness and compassion. Perhaps its giving your road rage a pause to understand the other person is experiencing rage on their terms and knowing the road is big enough for everyone to drive on even if it’s on separate sides. Favorite self care tip is laughing as often as you can.– Aundrea Veney, Licensed Femme! Teacher

“Take time every morning to ground yourself. You can do this several ways. You can visualize light coming from your tailbone and hips down deep into the earth and feeling the earth’s support coming back up through your feet. Or you can rub the bottom of your feet with a stainless steel spoon that gives you an electrical grounding. Or you can go outside and put your bare feet on grass or sand or dirt. Best yet, do all three. When you feel grounded it helps you emotionally stay present and not get knocked off your axis so easily by things outside of yourself.”
Often we get caught up in our own problems and miseries and we can’t see the forest for the trees. Having an objective pair of eyes and ears can give you what you need. So calling a girlfriend or a family member and asking them to just listen for 5 minutes without trying to fix or change anything is extremely helpful. They don’t even need to give feedback or pass any wisdom along just someone to witness what you are going through is enough to help me go from an contracted state to a more expansive place. “Someone to tell it to is one of the fundamental needs of human beings.” Miles Franklin– Rachel (Odhner) Hotson, Licensed Femme! Teacher and Founding Femme! Apprentice
“Find a tribe. It can be online or in person but find a group where you can be yourself and feel heard. Connection is one of the biggest antidotes to loneliness and depression. You need to really feel you aren’t alone. ”– Jodi Targon, Licensed Femme! Teacher, 11! Circle

If you want something in addition to or instead of the virtual Emotional Tour, we also have an October Freebie for you, in the form of a Femme! Mood Tracker.
Have you ever heard about mood trackers? We are going to share more on that later. However, for those who want to jump in and start on day 1, use our template to create five emotional moods that you’ll be tracking daily. We made the squares for you to create your color chart. Each day, color a different part of the Femme! body that corresponds to your mood and its respective color. Also, we are fully aware there are more than 38 slots of her body. That’s fine. The more free spirited folks will enjoy the extra spaces.
